All Mathilde Wants is to Fit in
Image behaving so selfishly that karma comes back and leads to years in debt. Well that’s what happened to Matilde when she lost Madame Forestier’s necklace at a “rich” party. Matilde reveals her true character through a decision to try and fit in no matter the cost. She has to have a dress, she has to have a fancy necklace for the party, and she wants to have a rich husband with money!
Mathilde took away the chance of her husband getting a gun to have to himself. Mathilde wanted a fancy dress for the party so badly so she made her husband pay for it. He played with the money he has been saving for a long time to get himself a gun. In the text it says “for this was exactly the amount he had been saving for a gun, intending to get a little shooting next summer.” She took the money to buy the dress because that’s what she thought would make her look rich. All Mathilde did was spend money on a dress that she will never wear again.
Mathilde borrows a necklace from Madame Forestier that she thought was expensive but was not at all. In the story “The Necklace” it says Go and see Madame Forestier and ask her to lend you some jewels. She wore the necklace and was very happy about wearing it. Once she got the dress and necklace she felt rich; But when the party was over she notested that it was gone and had to pay back the necklace she lost. Mathilde has less money than she had before and had to learn how to work for something that she wanted.
All Mathilde wanted was money, she thought that if you had money then everybody would like her. She wanted to be able to buy a new dress every time someone had a party, and have a bunch of expensive stuff. Mathilda also wanted a rich husband, So if she had money and her so did her husband then they would be rich. All she wanted was money. In the story “The Necklace” it says, “She suffered endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy and luxury.” Mathilde really wanted to be rich and have money.
In the end Matilde ended up with less money that she had before. Now learned that she has to work for what she wants, she can just get it handed to her. She got the money, she got the dress, she got the necklace, but in the long run she ended up with nothing. Mathilde should of thought of what would happen if she spent money that she had, because she was spending money she didn´t have.
